The Safe Nest Project will furnish & transform homes for LGBTQ+ youth
Washington, DC - The Wanda Alston Foundation is honored to be selected as the recipient of the 2025 hatch! microgrant, powered by Nest DC.
The award will fund the Safe Nest Project, an initiative to furnish safe, affirming homes for 20 young, Black and Latino LGBTQ+ residents. Alongside the upgrades, youth will also gain hands-on experience in assembling and repairing furniture, building practical skills and confidence that last well beyond move-in day.
“Queer youth deserve homes that reflect their worth,” said Cesar Toledo, Executive Director of the Wanda Alston Foundation. “Thanks to Nest DC, we’re helping our youth step into spaces that finally feel like theirs, warm, safe and filled with possibilities.”
The initiative builds on recent facility improvements, including expanded Wi-Fi and apartment upgrades, advancing the Foundation’s mission to provide housing, support services, and pathways to economic mobility for DC’s at-risk and homeless LGBTQ+ young people.
